WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) – A report by Women’s Voices for the Earth has raised concern about what fragrance chemicals are in the cleaning products, laundry detergents, and air fresheners people use in their homes. The report called « What’s That Smell » reviewed 37 scientific studies. The results say the fragrance chemicals that carry the most risk are artificial musks and phthalates. The health problems associated with these chemicals range from minor allergic reactions to even asthma attacks. Phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption and fertility problems in animal studies. Another concern the environmental group has is that companies aren’t listing the ingredients of the products on their labels. « The consumers are really getting exposed to things that they have now way of knowing what they are that can cause them real health harms and they can’t make informed decisions about what to buy what to use, said Ralph Scott with Parents for Non-Toxic Alternatives. Manufactures of the cleaning products disagree. The may not list all of the fragrance ingredients on product labels in order to protect proprietary information, but they do say their products are safe. Brian Sansonia with American Cleaning Institute told us, « The fact is fragrances used in cleaning products undergo extensive safety assessments and have for decades so consumers can continue to have confidence in using these products everyday. » And part of a new voluntary initiative the companies are adding more information about the ingredients in their products on their company websites.
